Emergency Hospitalization

Providing immediate access and effective management for patients in psychiatric crisis can mean the difference between a safe and successful outcome and potential disaster. The RNs at PsychCoverage have been providing this unique after-hours service to private practice psychiatrists since 1995.

Crisis calls are immediately connected to one of our experienced and specially-trained Psychiatric Nurses for assessment, support and critical care coordination. In some circumstances, skillful de-escalation, use of prn medication and follow up may be the most appropriate recourse. If a call is determined to be beyond the scope of a safe telephonic assessment and intervention, the PsychCoverage RN will provide the necessary expertise to ensure safety and risk mitigation for all concerned. Calls beyond the scope of a safe and effective telephonic intervention may require accessing local community resources that include:

• Education to family members regarding the 5150 process
• Arranging face-to-face evaluations at a local Mental Health Facility
• Searching for inpatient bed availability in the community
• Initiating dispatch of first responders e.g. 911 or Paramedics
